dc.descriptionThe classical electron is presented as made up of an electric charge and two Dirac monopoles of opposite charge performing a magnetic dipole. It is discussed that a valid variational principle for this system can be defined. The Dirac quantization condition for charges can be derived in Quantum Electrodynamics as monopoles are properly defined in the structure. Further comments on the subject are addressed since the proper care of Dirac strings is still an open issue.
