A horizontally homogeneous bed develops inhomogeneities in which a dense and a dilute phase separate and coexist. The dilute region resembles a gas, while the dense region is like a liquid with a velocity distribution very different from a Gaussian.REVTeX4/REVTeX, 4 pages, 5 figuresStatistical MechanicsSoft Condensed MatterSpontaneous phase separation in a vibro-fluidized granular layertext
