Locally semisimple and maximal subalgebras of the finitary Lie algebras $gl(\infty)$, $sl(\infty)$, $so(\infty)$, and $sp(\infty)$

For simple finite--dimensional Lie algebras these classes of subalgebras have been described in the classical works of A. Malcev and E. Dynkin.
